NordVPN on Android – Review 2026
The Android app covers the essentials well, with some notable differences compared to the desktop clients. Here is what you can – and cannot – do on Android.
Installation & Setup
The NordVPN Android app is available through the Play Store and the NordVPN website (APK for sideloading, though the Play Store version is recommended for automatic updates). Setup requires signing in with your NordVPN account – the app supports QR-code login if you prefer scanning from a desktop browser.
Interface
The Android interface mirrors the desktop app's map-based layout, adapted for touch. A floating "Quick Connect" button dominates the bottom of the screen. The server list is accessible via a bottom sheet, with the same specialty categories (P2P, Obfuscated, Double VPN) as the desktop client.
Split Tunneling on Android
Android supports per-app VPN routing (split tunneling), which works well. You can exclude apps like your banking app or a local streaming service from the VPN tunnel while keeping everything else protected. This is a frequently requested feature and NordVPN's implementation is clean.
Always-On VPN
Android's native "Always-On VPN" mode is supported. When enabled, Android forces all traffic through the VPN from boot, with no window of exposure. Combined with Android's built-in VPN kill switch (Block connections without VPN), this provides strong continuous protection.
Threat Protection Lite
Mobile gets "Threat Protection Lite" – a DNS-based version that blocks known malicious domains but does not scan downloaded files (that requires the full desktop version). It is still a useful addition, especially on public Wi-Fi, but users expecting the same depth as the Windows version may be disappointed.
Battery Impact
NordLynx on Android had a measurable but acceptable battery impact in our tests: approximately 6–10% additional battery drain over an 8-hour session compared to no VPN, which is in line with other WireGuard-based VPNs. OpenVPN drained about 14–18% more, which we find harder to justify given the speed penalty.
What Is Missing on Android
Android lacks the full Threat Protection (file scanning), and Meshnet features are more limited than on desktop. Double VPN and Onion Over VPN are available but incur a heavy speed penalty on mobile connections.
Android Verdict
NordVPN's Android app is solid. Split tunneling, always-on VPN, and NordLynx speeds make it suitable for everyday mobile use. The main trade-off versus desktop is the lighter Threat Protection – not a deal-breaker, but worth knowing. For Android users who prioritize a stable, fast VPN connection, NordVPN is a strong option.
