NordVPN on Windows – Detailed Review 2026

The Windows app is NordVPN's most feature-complete client. We walked through installation, tested every major function, and measured real-world performance over three weeks.

Installation & Initial Setup

Downloading the NordVPN Windows client takes you to a standard .exe installer weighing around 7–8 MB. Installation is straightforward and typically completes in under two minutes. You will need to log in with your NordVPN account credentials or scan a QR code with the mobile app if you prefer that flow.

On first launch, NordVPN runs a quick connection diagnostic and prompts you to enable Threat Protection – a reasonable on-boarding step, though some users may prefer to configure this manually rather than having it enabled by default.

The TAP driver or WireGuard kernel driver installs silently in the background. We did not encounter any driver conflicts on Windows 10 (22H2) or Windows 11 (23H2) during testing.

Interface & Usability

The Windows app uses a dark, map-centric layout. A world map fills the main panel, with a search bar and "Quick Connect" button prominently placed. The server list is accessible via the left sidebar, organized by country, specialty (P2P, Obfuscated, Double VPN, Onion Over VPN, Dedicated IP), and recently used servers.

Navigation feels intuitive after a brief learning curve. The settings panel is comprehensive – perhaps more so than a casual user needs – but logically organized into sub-sections (Connection, Split Tunneling, Notifications, Advanced).

Accessibility note: NordVPN's Windows app scales reasonably well with Windows display scaling (125%, 150%). We did not encounter clipping or illegible text at 150% scaling on a 1080p display.

Windows-Specific Features

Split Tunneling

Split tunneling on Windows allows you to specify which applications bypass the VPN and which route through it (or vice versa – you can choose "route only selected apps through VPN"). This is useful for banking apps that flag VPN connections, or for maintaining full local network speed while keeping a browser protected.

Threat Protection

The full Threat Protection feature on Windows operates independently of the VPN tunnel – you can have it active even when not connected to a VPN server. It blocks malicious domains at the DNS level and also scans downloaded files for malware. In our testing, it blocked around 94% of known malicious domains from a standard threat feed, which is competitive with dedicated ad blockers.

Meshnet

Meshnet turns NordVPN into a peer-to-peer encrypted overlay network. You can add up to 60 external devices (friends, colleagues) and route traffic through them – useful for accessing resources on a remote machine or sharing files securely without a third-party cloud service.

Auto-connect

You can configure NordVPN to connect automatically when the system starts, when joining a specific Wi-Fi network type (trusted/untrusted), or always. The "On Wi-Fi" trigger is particularly useful for laptop users who frequently connect to public hotspots.

Speed & Performance

On Windows, NordLynx delivered our best results: a 500 Mbps baseline connection produced 430–465 Mbps through nearby servers (Paris and Frankfurt from a UK test location). CPU usage during active transfer hovered between 4–8% on a mid-range Intel i5 processor – lower than OpenVPN, which peaked at 18–22%.

On long-distance routes (UK to Singapore), NordLynx provided 155–180 Mbps – more than enough for streaming and video calls. OpenVPN UDP on the same route gave 90–115 Mbps, which remains workable but noticeably slower.

Kill Switch & DNS Leak Protection

The Windows app includes two kill switch modes: an "App Kill Switch" that blocks only specified applications if the VPN drops, and a system-wide kill switch that cuts all internet traffic. We recommend the system-wide option for maximum protection.

DNS leak tests (run via standard DNS leak test tools) showed no leaks during normal operation. We also tested what happens if the VPN connection drops mid-session – the kill switch triggered within 1–2 seconds, blocking outbound traffic until the VPN reconnected. This is the expected behavior and it worked reliably across 20 test disconnections.

Windows App Verdict

9.4 / 10

The NordVPN Windows application is polished, feature-complete, and performs well under testing. Full Threat Protection, flexible split tunneling, and dual kill switch modes set it apart from most competitors' Windows apps. Our only meaningful criticism is that the interface can feel information-dense for users who just want to click "Connect" and move on – but that same depth is exactly what power users are looking for.
