NordVPN on iOS & macOS – Review 2026
Apple's platforms come with their own constraints. We tested NordVPN on an iPhone 15 running iOS 17 and a MacBook Pro on macOS Sonoma to see what works and what is platform-limited.
iOS – Features & Limitations
The iOS app integrates with Apple's Network Extension framework, which means NordVPN can function as a system VPN rather than requiring a persistent background process. This is good for battery life but comes with Apple-imposed restrictions.
What You Get on iOS
- NordLynx and IKEv2/IPsec protocols (OpenVPN is not available on iOS due to Apple's restrictions)

The iOS kill switch is implemented differently than on Android: it relies on Apple's "On Demand" rules to reconnect automatically if the VPN drops. This is not a true hard kill switch – there is a brief exposure window during reconnection. For high-security scenarios, Android or Windows provides more reliable kill switch behavior.
macOS – Features & Comparison
The macOS app is significantly more capable than the iOS version, largely because Apple gives more flexibility to desktop developers than mobile app developers.
What macOS Adds Over iOS
- Split tunneling – route selected apps or destinations outside the VPN
- Full Threat Protection (blocks trackers, ads, and scans files for malware)
- OpenVPN support (in addition to NordLynx and IKEv2)
- App-level kill switch alongside the system kill switch
- Meshnet with full device routing
macOS-Specific Notes
On Apple Silicon (M1/M2/M3 Macs), NordLynx performs exceptionally well. In our tests on an M2 MacBook Pro, speeds through a nearby NordLynx server peaked at 450–480 Mbps on a 500 Mbps connection – comparable to the best we saw on Windows. Intel Mac performance was slightly lower but still competitive.
The macOS app uses a system extension (rather than a kernel extension), which means it runs in user space and does not require kernel-level access. This is the preferred approach for security and stability on modern macOS versions.
iOS vs. macOS summary: If you use both Apple platforms, macOS delivers a significantly fuller NordVPN experience. iOS is adequate for casual privacy protection on the go, but the split tunneling and full Threat Protection gaps may matter depending on your use case.
iOS & macOS Verdict
macOS offers a near-desktop experience with full Threat Protection and split tunneling. iOS is limited by Apple's platform restrictions – functional for everyday use but not the best option if you need split tunneling or a hard kill switch. For iPhone users who need the highest level of protection, a VPN-enabled router may be worth considering as a complement.
